Ok, I know, it's about time! Yesterday - I suppose it was the day before - ok , Saturday I finally got to see the ever famous movie
Memento.
If you haven't seen the movie or read the book (I think it was based on a book), and intend on doin so, don't bother reading further. I hate it when people ruin movies for me too...
This movie has been out a long while now, and I've even heard so many conversations about from different circles, but have never been able to experience it until now. I'm glad I did. It's kinda funny when you watch it, every 10 mintues or so, you think you've solved the murder mystery, but then a small detail messes up your whole idea of the truth only to make you think about it again. At least that's how I felt about it. Even with my analitical mind and attention to detail, this movie left me with thoughts of,
now wait a minute... I managed to find a page from
Salon.com that actually trys to explain it all. But, it's only one persons opinion on the movie, so there's no need for flame to me or the writer.
So, my question to you, since I know many people I know have already seen it before me, and are probably bored of this subject (judging from how many times I've heard this movie talked about at social gatherings before today),
What REALLY happened? So, here's what I got out of the movie... 2 coked up thugs break in and rape Leonard's wife, but doesn't kill her. He shoots one guy and saves her before being smacked in the head himself by a second intruder causing this disability he endures. Leonard suffers from a disease where he has no short term memory. He ends up killing his own wife with the insulin. He escapes the insane asylum. ''Teddy,'' a cop, helps him track and kill the second assailant. Important clues he tattoos on his body. Natalie realizes he has killed her boyfriend, but for some reason sleeps with him (I'm not sure it's sexual or not) and
helps him find his ''killer'' who ends up being Teddy; which at the end we find out that Leonard, himself, set him up. Then again... Maybe Natalie didn't know Leonard killed her boyfriend. Because she said a ''Teddy'' he was to meet him. And then again... why would Leonard be in her boyfriend's car and clothes and Natalie not think anything of it? Odd...
On a side story, this Sammy Jenkins... This confuses me. This is where a fellow named Sammy Jenkins trys to claim insurance, but Leonard thinks it's not physical but rather mental (or was it the other way around?) and denies him insurance. Frustrated, his wife goes ''crazy'' and as a routine she has Sammy give her her insulin shot for her diabetes. Only this time, she see's if he really was faking and sets the watch back and asks for another one, and again for the third time. She goes into a coma and never breaks out.
But, then scrambled in the movie are very short clips of random thoughts like Sammy in the insane asylum, and flashes Leonard in Sammy's place as if he were in the asylum. Then there's a flash where you see Leonard pinch his wife's leg, and then after ''Teddy's'' coaxing it flashes again, only to be changed to Leonard giving her an insulin shot. So was it Sammy who killed his wife (''Teddy'' claims Sammy never had a wife) or did Leonard kill his wife? Was Sammy's life just really a reflection on his own with some truth to what he did to Sammy? Yet another puzzler, we see a shot of Leonard sitting with his wife, who seems alive and well, and he has a tatto on his chest which reads ''John G. raped and murdered my wife.'' Now was that a reality or was that a dream? Did I miss anything? So confused...
SEGUE
Saturday night I got to see my baby twin cousins from Hawaii, I haven't seen them in a while. They can hold their bottles by themselves now! They're going to be a year old in October, so old! Stay young while you can!
Whelp, tomorrow, more fiberglass and bondo-ing. I haven't mentioned anything about my little project online, I have my reasons. Everyone seems to want my non-existant pile of money...
